A Little Parable for Mothers

The young mother set her foot on the path of life. "Is the way long?" she asked. And her guide said, "Yes, and the way is hard. And you will be old before you reach the end of it. But the end will be better than the beginning."

But the young mother was happy and she would not believe that anything could be better than those years. So she played with her children and gathered flowers for them along the way and bathed them in the clear streams; and the sun shone on them and life was good, and the young mother cried, "Nothing will never be lovelier than this."

Then night came, and storm, and the path was dark and the children shook with fear and cold, and the mother drew them close and covered them with her mantle and the children said, "Oh Mother, we are not afraid, for you are near, and no harm can come," and the mother said, "This is better than the brightness of day, for I have taught my children courage."

And the morning came, and there was a hill ahead and the children climbed and grew weary, and the mother was weary, but at all times she said to the children, "A little patience and we are there." So the children climbed and when they reached the top, they said, "We could not have done it without you, Mother." And the mother, when she lay down that night, looked up at the stars and said, "This is a better day than the last, for my children have learned fortitude in the face of hardness. Yesterday I gave them courage, today I have given then strength."

And with the next day came strange clouds which darkened the earth, clouds of war and hate and evil--and the children groped and stumbled, and the mother said, "Look up. Lift your eyes to the light." And the children looked and saw above the clouds an Everlasting Glory, and it guided them and brought them beyond the darkness. And that night the mother said, "This is the best day of all for I have shown my children God."

And the days went on, and the weeks and the months and the years, and the mother grew old, and she was little and bent. And her children were tall and strong and walked with courage. And when the way was rough they lifted her, for she was as light as a feather; and at last they came to a hill, and beyond the hill they could see a shining road and golden gates flung wide. And the mother said, "I have reached the end of my journey. And now I know that the end is better than the beginning, for my children can walk alone and their children after them." And the children said, "You will always walk with us, Mother, even when you have gone through the gates."

Melinda is the editor of Austin Woman Magazine and we "met" through my running an ad in their "Pink Pages," which features woman-owned businesses. That is what the "C" family said to me when, the morning of their session, it was dreary outside! Rather than chance another weather mishap, they decided to just come in and make it work. Lo and behold, the rain held off for a couple hours and we not only got some beautiful studio images, but we were able to go outside as well. Jenny really wanted something different for her family portrait, and I think we nailed it! It was great working with this family - they found me at the annual PlayBingo event (I volunteer for the Center for Child Protection, and donate to the auction at this event). I know you've all seen the bluebonnets popping up along the highways. Well, since I will NEVER put a child at risk by photographing them alongside a busy street, I have waited til ours (on our studio property) are ready - and they ARE!

The "B" family came to see me recently for a family session. You may remember Lynn from our "Hot Mamas" portrait party. Her two girls were just delightful, and full of energy. The storyteller collage is a favorite from this type of session because it really showcases the fun we all had.

I just love this image of the girls with their dog. You could really tell this dog loves them - he was so patient with all the hugging, giggling and activity. Such a special bond between a child and their pet!

Sweet Hensley is one of our Bright Beginnings Baby's First Year club members. This was her 4-month session, where we look for that milestone of pushing up on the tummy. She did GREAT! And not only that - she rolled over from tummy to back FOR THE FIRST TIME! Yes, folks, not one but two big milestones captured right here in our studio! I just love seeing my little clients reach these stages in their young lives, and look forward to capturing many more over the years. Here are a couple of faves, plus a collage we made from the precious handmade quilt that adorns her room - it's an ABC quilt, but we pulled the letters of her name to make an adorable collage for her room. Meet little "L." Isn't he the sweetest thing? I met his family (mom, dad, uncle, grandma & grandpa) a couple of years ago when they booked a "Home for the Holidays" session. The lovely Lorelie called me this past week and said that she wanted maternity portraits. Yay, I love the pregnant female form, and this is one of my favorite types of sessions. While we chatted about what she'd like to do, she casually mentioned that she was already 2 cm dilated!! WHAT?? We had to hurry and make our plans, which *almost* got foiled by the darn rain. I put on my rubber boots and headed to Barton Creek, the sky stayed dry for the time we were there, and we had a blast! I love the images we captured, they really show the love these two young people share, and the excitement of the new family they have created. Enjoy a few of my faves ...

I met little miss P last week for a ballerina session. She was such a perfect little princess! I think she is so well trained because she is already a winning beauty queen. So easy to work with, she followed my directions REALLY well, especially for a TWO year old :) I loved watching her do her little dance moves and hear her giggle. Her mom wants a special series to enter into an upcoming pageant, so I'm keeping that a secret, but here a few of my favorite individual images...

This one I added a little extra retouching to give it more of a pageant feel. "P" is so beautiful, she doesn't really need much!

This wall display would be adorable in P's room. It features different poses on each print, plus the letters to spell out her name. Each 10x20 print hangs a bit out from the wall.

I know mama Kay is stalking my blog, so I hope she loves these as much as I do!!

{Georgetown Newborn Photographer} Miracle Baby G!

I am always honored when a family chooses me to photograph their precious children. Stacy met me at the MamaCents sale last year and wanted something special when her son was born, especially since his daddy is proudly serving our country in the middle east right now. As we chatted at her session, I realized what a very special honor it was to be able to photograph baby G. He is truly a miracle baby - IVF with only a single egg available! Having struggled with infertility myself, I was so moved when I heard Baby G's story. What a thrill for this family. Daddy will be home soon, but for now, I hope he is watching! Here are a few of my favorites...

I just love this one - both Mom and Baby are so peaceful and content.

Stacy is lucky to have her mom here for a visit. Grandma Sheila didn't know that anyone in my camera room is fair game to be photographed, but I know she will love having this image of three generations.

So may adorable images of Baby G! This collage would be perfect in his Dr. Seuss themed room.

A referral to one of a clients' friends is the best compliment I can receive. Missy recently referred the "R" family to me. They had been to a photographer in Salado, but he said he "doesn't photograph two year olds." Wow - I love two year olds! They are definitely a little more effort than, say a smiling, non-moving 6month old or a ham of a 5 year old. But they have such personality and I love bringing that out. Hopefully, the "R" family will love these as much as I do. Here are a couple of faves from the session, with both the two yr old AND the smiling, non-moving 6 month old :)

The adorable Miss Sophia! I've been trying to get her into the studio for, oh, well, since she was in her mommy's tummy :) Her mommy is a good friend of my client, Cheri, and wanted to come in, but they still lived in Dallas. What fun! The coordinators of the MamaCents show (that I sponsor each year) had a great idea for Valentine's day. They held a contest and out of over a hundred entries, several lucky mamas came into the studio for a portrait party! We had a makeup artist, yummy food and drink, and each mama got to have time in front of the camera. It was so much fun, I'm looking forward to doing this again - if you are interested in a Girls' Night Out or other get-together for a portrait party, give me a call at the studio! 512-930-1902

The mamas all looked great, and started off mild and pretty headshot type portraits. Then after the wine flowed a little while, some got more adventurous and we grabbed some wraps and got a little sexier for their hubbies. I've been photographing Meagan since she was just starting to walk. Now that she has a little sister, who is just starting to walk, our most recent session was, well, a bit more challenging!! Love is in the Air {Austin Wedding Photographer}

With all this "non-Texas" weather we've had this month, I was really nervous about Jessa & Clark's February 6 wedding. I actually said a prayer every day for good weather! You see, when they booked me to photograph their wedding, they had hoped for February 20 - but that is my Abby's birthday, so in order to have *me* photograph their wedding, they rearranged their date! So, boy, I felt a LOT of pressure - if the weather was bad and they chose that date because of me, well, let's just say that my prayers were answered. It was a GORGEOUS day!

The event was held at Vista West Ranch in Dripping Springs. It was my first time there and it was soooo neat! Very rustic, lots of really cool touches. Jessa and Clark added so many fun things to their special day that tied in with the rustic theme. Clark hand-painted the wooden signs, they had s'mores to enjoy by the campfire when it got cold, even yummy flavored popcorn while the guests mingled after the ceremony!

I was really touched by one detail on Jessa's dress. Her mom had woven a ribbon containing a special bible verse into the hem of her dress. It was embroidered in blue, for her "something blue." It was such a sweet touch!

The wonderful food was by Sullivan Street, great music provided by Ryan at Altared Weddings. All in all, a perfect day for a perfect couple! Here are some highlights. The full gallery will be ready in a few more days! Thanks, Jessa and Clark, for trusting me with this special day!

Outdoor Family Fun {Georgetown Family Photographer}

Wow, the weather has just been yucky! Not only is my studio construction stalled, it's just been dreary - cold and wet. We had a LUCY break in the mess last week when the T family was scheduled to come in. They wanted an outdoor studio session, but had decided to go either way, if the weather didn't cooperate. It did! As you may know, our studio is participating in the 2nd annual International Charity Model Search. This is a great contest designed to raise money and awareness for the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep charity. Helping Hearts - Angel Sessions

Watching the news nightly, seeing the tragedy unfold in Haiti, I look around and say a thankful prayer for all I have in my life. I hug my children and thank God that we are safe. My children have been touched, too, by the tragedy. Together we talked about how we could help. Then my good friends Michele and Lyndsay came up with a way to use our skills to help. They formed Helping Hearts for Haiti as a way for photographers to ban together to help.

Toward this effort, I am offering Angel sessions. For a $25 donation to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief Fund, your little angel will have a special 20-minute session with me, to take place the week of February 15-18. (Monday, 2/15, is a school holiday for many of you, so please use that time to help!!). For an additional $25 donation, you will receive a gorgeous, framed 4x4 print of your little angel. We will have specially priced collections for this event as well.

Baby Boom! {Georgetown Newborn Photographer}

There really is nothing better than a sweet, sleepy newborn! And I've had several already this year - that, to me, is the BEST way to start the year! Here is little Luke. He was a little older than most of our newborns, at a ripe old three weeks, LOL, but since I had been out of town, we made the best of the schedule (and I did a little praying that he'd be as sleepy and curly as a younger babe). He was FABULOUS! A little baby acne, which is easily removed in post processing, but slept like a charm. Even with an excited two-yr old sis joining us. I was thrilled with the results, even got the elusive "both children together," which you can imagine is not easy with a toddler! Here are a few of my faves...

Ah, I just love getting my "baby fix" with my newborn clients!! I've hit the bonanza so far this year, with several newborns right out of the gate. What a great way to start my new year! Newborns are such a joy to photograph, but it's even more rewarding when it's a client I have worked with previously. Not only do I get to see the first baby "all grown up" but it warms my heart to know they were happy with my work and trust me to create something special for their next born.
This is little Owen, newest member of the "P" family. Such a sweet baby, all cuddly and no crying at all!! I met his big brother, Emory, just two years ago. Time sure flies, and he has turned into such a handsome lil guy! And of course, mom looks FABULOUS! Here are a few of my faves from their session...

Last year, participating studios raised over $160,000 for the Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep foundation (http://www.nilmdts.org/), and our own studio raised over $1500! My Three Sons {Georgetown Family Photographer}

Wait, no, WHOA! I did not mean 'my' as in "mine -teri's" LOL! The sweet "G" family came in recently for a session with THEIR three sons! And they were such handsome boys with perfect manners. Congrats to mom & dad for doing such a great job - I have a boy and I know the challenges that come with parenting one. They are also in the process of adopting a little girl - and my prayers are with them that it all gets finished as soon as possible. I look forward to the day when I get to photograph them with a little splash of PINK!

I also photographed Mr. G alone, for his business headshots. He is a prominent dentist in Liberty Hill - and has a billboard that will feature one of the photos I took. I kinda feel important now, LOL, I've never had my work on a billboard before :)

A few weeks ago I found the most gorgeous red couch for sale on craigslist. When I called the owner, it turned out to be another photographer, who was sad to let it go (but didn't have the room to keep it). It was great catching up with the P family recently. I first photographed the lovely Alicia when she was pregnant, then baby B's first session as a newborn. I had the pleasure of photographing the B family recently (at my new, fab, EXCLUSIVE location!). What a great time we had, traipsing around the ponds. The girls were gorgeous in their pretty dresses and blonde hair - Daddy's perfect princesses! But change into jeans and boots and they were ready for anything - even jumping off of the back of a trailer (multiple times!!). Here are a few of my faves from their session.

I recently "acquired" access to a VERY cool location, right near my studio (so no "on-location" fees!!). I took one of my favorite families out for their annual family session. And I was thrilled to get a good one of the three kiddos together, because little Kohen is at "that age" where she wants to do her OWN thing - not what the silly old photographer would like her to do!! I hope Cheri loves these as much as I do - and that this family portrait will work great in her family room with the warm red walls!

Sweet Parker - Growing So Fast! {Austin Baby Photographer}

I can't believe how quickly that first year speeds by. Even though I witness it often with our Bright Beginnings Baby Club members, like little Miss Parker, I am still amazed how much they change in such a short time. It is so much fun to see the transition from tiny, helpless baby to active, exploring toddler. Parker is crawling like mad, and we had fun keeping her contained!! But she was a trooper, letting us dress her in all the adorable clothes mommy brought - even the dreaded Halloween costume with HOOD - what a sweetie pie! I just want to apologize to those who are waiting on a blog posting!! If you watch the blog, you probably thought I was on vacation, maybe lounging somewhere tropical with an umbrella in my drink :) Nope, just gearing up for the busy season!! I will be posting something each day the rest of this week, I promise!!

Also, I wanted to let everyone know about our upcoming Holiday Minis, November 12-14. That is next week, folks!! We are doing a "white christmas" set with a white tree, white sparkly presents and white rug. Of course, white, gray or pastel clothing will be super, but kids-in-jammies are always adorable, and the bright colors popular this season will also really pop against the white! I also have some white tutus!

We will also have a red holiday setup available for those trendy black/white/red combos I've been seeing everywhere!!

These sessions are limited to three days (Thur 11/12 thru Sat 11/14). If you want a Saturday, you need to call ASAP, those will go fast! 930-1902

Two options for your session:

a) $25 per person session fee, covers session only OR

b) $249 incl session, 1-11x14 & 8 wallets (same pose), plus 24 holiday cards. Up to 5 family members, $25 per additional.

Bright Eyed Baby Boy! {Austin Newborn Photographer}

Meet the adorable little Blake. He was the most alert newborn I've seen in quite some time. Not fussy at all, just very interested in the world around him! I think that means he is a genius!! My longtime client and good friends, the "L" family just welcomed the fourth bundle of joy to their family. Baby Daniel is such a sweet baby! He just slept and slept without a peep.
